Why Circus Maximus?

The Deva Legion H.O.G. Chapter is based in Chester. Some people have asked why Deva Legion and why Circus Maximus?

In the first century A.D. the Romans built a marching camp and then a fort at the then mouth of the Deva Fluvius (River Dee). The fort was in a strategic location in the north west to defend against tribes from North Wales and to help block any tribes fleeing north. A civilian settlement then grew around the fort creating the city of Deva, and the garrison based in the growing city was the Deva Legion – hence the chapter name.

Continuing the Roman theme, the Deva Legion Rally was named Circus Maximus after the ancient Roman chariot-racing stadium and mass entertainment venue located in Rome, Italy – the first and largest stadium in ancient Rome and its later Empire. 

Which leads us to our rally – Circus Maximus. Not quite chariot racing, but certainly great entertainment! Our club, although based in Chester, has around half of its members in North Wales. Circus Maximus is sub-titled ‘The Rally In The Valley’, as it is located in the beautiful Dee Valley in Llangollen, the home of the International Eisteddfod. 

Every summer since 1947 Llangollen has staged the Eisteddfod – one of the world’s most inspirational cultural festivals. Each year around 4,000 performers and as many as 50,000 visitors converge on this beautiful small Welsh town and its International Pavilion; to sing and dance in a unique combination of competition, performance, and international peace and friendship.

Circus Maximus is held in the Eisteddfod Pavillion, which is a great facility in its own field with camping, toilets, showers and parking, a great concert hall and separate bar, all just a short 10-minute stroll from the town itself. For those wanting a little more luxury, Llangollen’s hotels, guest houses and B&Bs provide a wide range of accommodation options. Thames Valley Rally 2019
Many of you would know that the Thames Valley Rally made a triumphant return to the events calendar in 2018. It was such a great success that you won’t be surprised to hear that it’s back and even bigger for 2019!

Based at Beaconsfield FC (conveniently located at junction 2 on the M40) the venue boasts a well-appointed campsite with showers, and secure on-site parking for motorcycles. A 4-star hotel is just 2 minutes from the site.

The Thames Valley Rally is a great event where rally goers can make new friends, have fun and share a common interest. 

With excellent bar facilities for the ‘evening gathering’, with live bands until 1am and warm summer nights, the party can go on until the small hours.

National Road Rally – July 6-7, 2019

The annual National Road Rally is a navigational scatter rally organised by the BMF and the Auto-Cycle Union. 

This two-day extravaganza of riding first took place in 1933 and is one of the oldest events for road riders in the motorcycle calendar, often referred to lightheartedly as England’s best kept secret. 

Starting at midday on Saturday and finishing on Sunday morning, choose from 120 miles to 540 miles, you set your own challenge, riding between 63 control locations scattered across the country from Stockton-on-Tees in the north to Horndean in the south, from the Welsh Marches to East Anglia. Start where you want. Finish where you want. You plan your own ride. It is a great challenge for everyone, whatever your ride, and whatever your experience.

The National Road Rally is your chance to test your riding ability along with other enthusiastic riders on all types of bikes, along some of the UK's finest roads.
