Ride to the Wall 2018
Ride to the Wall this year held its 11th annual ride to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire to remember the 16,000 that lost their lives through conflict since the end of WW2 whose names appear on the walls of the Armed Forces Memorial.
After 10 days of dry weather, on October 6th, the weather forecast was torrential rain for most of those riding in on the day, just as it was in 2016. But that didn’t stop the more than 4,500 motorcycles, trikes and scooters leaving from one of the 11 start points or making their own way there. 10,500 were counted in attendance and included families of those who had ridden to the event on 2 or 3 wheels and those attending for the service of remembrance, and also supporting the motorcycling community.
This year I decided to ride in with Route 3, and then get back to Drayton Manor in time for Route 1 (Parade of Flags) departure. Leaving Drayton Manor at 0500 hrs the weather looked extremely unsettled to say the least.
Route 3 was marshalled by Nene Valley Chapter, and it is the first time I had seen this group of volunteers in action for RTTW. Their professionalism throughout the two hours of guiding people in, parking them up, and keeping their spirits up was a credit to them and impressive to see. I know this attitude is the same across all the start points and with en route marshalling. Most of those that volunteer are members of H.O.G.
The ride up, led by Nene Valley Chapter’s Head Road Captain, was executed with almost perfect timing, considering the conditions. This was replicated across all the other start points, and credit must go to all those involved in the managing of the routes.
RTTW wouldn’t be where it is today without the support of the hundreds of volunteers, a large proportion of whom are H.O.G. members. To date you have been part of a charity that has raised in excess of £800,000 towards the upkeep of the National Memorial Arboretum - THANK YOU!
